Welcome to Local Chow Breeders, a family-run kennel where passion and responsibility meet. We are proud Chow Chow breeders devoted to the Chow Chow breed – raising beautiful Chow Chow puppies for sale with care, love, and a focus on health and quality. Our mission is to preserve what makes Chow Chow so special while offering families the joy of a loyal companion.
In 1986, while my mother was pregnant with me, my brother had a near-death experience. After a long recovery and a series of events, the Rhodes family was gifted a Chow Chow Dog, whom my brother named Thor.
Thor, our first Chow Chow Dog, was the first of his kind in our area, turning heads and dropping jaws wherever he went. Growing up, I often heard people exclaim, “What kind of dog is that?!”
Naturally, my love for Chow Chows runs deep. Our family quickly fell in love with the breed, and my father soon brought home another one. Growing up on a dairy farm with a few Chow Chow Dogs roaming around and the occasional litter of adorable, soft, cuddly puppies made for some truly wonderful childhood memories. Berners quickly became our family’s mascot.
After I got married and we had our first child, I knew I wanted my children to grow up with animals. Despite no longer living on a dairy farm, my wife and I decided Berners were the perfect fit for our family. In 2016, we bought our first girl, and the rest is history!

At Local Chow Breeders, we aim to be one of the top Local Chow Breeders in the country! We follow AKC standards closely to raise healthy, well-cared-for puppies.
Every Chow Chow Puppy we offer includes AKC registration, so you can trust you’re bringing home a high-quality, loving companion!

We prioritize the health and well‑being of our parent dogs because healthy adults produce healthy, confident Chow Chow puppies.
Our Chow Chows follow the recommended health screening protocols for the breed, including:
Chow Chows are a medium‑heavy, straight‑rear breed, making hip screening essential for long‑term mobility and comfort.
Elbow issues can occur in the breed, and responsible breeders screen for them to reduce hereditary risk.
While less common in Chow Chows than in toy breeds, patella checks are part of a complete orthopedic evaluation.
A veterinary cardiologist screens for congenital or hereditary heart conditions.
A board‑certified ophthalmologist checks for Chow‑specific concerns such as entropion, cataracts, distichiasis, and other ocular conditions.
These tests help reduce hereditary issues and support our mission to produce sound, well‑structured, long‑lived Chow Chow puppies.
Each breeding pair is selected for:
We breed for dogs that are not only beautiful, but emotionally steady and well‑suited for family life.
Many of our dogs come from champion and health‑tested bloodlines, reflecting excellence in:
This heritage is evident in every puppy we raise.
